The top spot belongs to Italy, but a New York pie shop took home second place.
“Throughout this year, in which we held awards ceremonies in Barcelona, Tokyo, New York, and Rome, we witnessed a continual rise in pizza quality,” the ranking’s curators said in a statement. “In 2023, our guide features over 2,000 venues, ranging from independent pizzerias to artisan pizza chains. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our diligent inspectors who traveled the world, expanding our map of excellent pizza destinations.
In total, New York, Naples, and Rome topped the list with five pizzerias each. Tokyo, London, Milan, and Caserta each saw four spots make the grade, while São Paulo and Copenhagen had three eateries given the honor.The top five was rounded out by Rafa Panatieri and Jorge Sastre’s Sartoria Panatieri in Barcelona, Daniele Cason’s the Pizza Bar on 38in Tokyo and Simone Padoan’s I Tigli in San Bonifacio. Sartoria Panatieri moved up an impressive amount, from No. 21 last year.
