Prince Charles's 1994 tour of L.A. included tea with Barbra Streisand, lunch at Crenshaw High School, and a fundraising dinner where Frank Sinatra sang to a crowd that included Tom Cruise and Goldie Hawn.

On his last night in the city, Charles attended a fundraising dinner at the mansion of legendary TV producer Aaron Spelling and his wife, reminisced about the party on her podcast, noting that it was the first party held at the house eventually nicknamed Candyland. “The first party, and one of [Candy’s] only parties, was for Prince Charles,” she remembered.

The night was billed as a fundraiser and cost $2,500 a head, but it was also the grand opening of the palatial 128-room, 56,500-square-foot house that had its own bowling alley, doll museum, 56-seat cinema, bomb shelter, and multiple swimming pools. That night, Frank Sinatra sang to a crowd that included the prince,One of the night’s cohosts, talent agent Lew Wasserman, told Dominick Dunne about the party’s ambiance.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Charles’s presence didn’t necessarily improve the environment. “Hollywood ‘royalty’ normally swaggers through the plethora of black-tie affairs satisfied that they are the biggest names in the room,” a writer later wrote. “But during back-to-back receptions—a charity gala at television czar Aaron Spelling's mansion and thebenefit movie premiere—most guests were acting so precious around authentic royalty that regular folks had to blush.”

The rest of the tour was filled with the slightly uncanny engagements that make up a royal schedule. He visited a Vons supermarket in Inglewood where he unveiled a plaque and spent some time promoting British foods, and a sheriff’s department youth activity center in South Central. He had lunch at Crenshaw High School with a student-run food company called “Food From the ’Hood.” He visited the LACMA and an antique-restoration company.
