Sunday's Oscars came with a few surprises—thanks to Bong Joon Ho and Parasite

? That was bafflingly incongruous, a performance of an old song that everyone remembers but I’m sure few really miss. The crowd in the Dolby Theatre gave him a standing ovation, though, so what do I know? Another brief rap performance,, came out of nowhere too. I get trying to freshen things up and re-enliven the audience, but that maybe wasn’t the most thrilling way to do it.

For the most part, though, the show moved at a breezy clip, its initially gaudy-seeming set transforming into a new motif or color palette as each award was given out. That Martin and Rock didn’t return—which, yes, means they weren’tKelly Marie Tran introduce presenters was sweet—but also a bit superfluous, when they already had the voice-of-God lady on hand to announce people’s entrances. Especially when that pre-presenter was intro-ing a presenter who was, in turn, presenting a montage. That’s a lot of lead-up for pretty little payoff. And then there were presenters and performers who didn’t get introduced at all. So, an elegant fix to not having a consistent host maneuver the show’s transitions was not found tonight.

Not helping that sense of itchy ennui was that so many of the big winners seemed preordained, with thegoing exactly as expected. That’s mostly on me, of course, for paying such feverish attention to this whole thing for six months straight, and it’s certainly no fault of the people who put this broadcast together. But perhaps once the ceremony returns to late February next year, there will be a bit more wiggle room for narratives to shift, allowing for unexpected triumphs on Oscar night.
