For this artist, modeling and self-exploration go hand in hand.
Before modeling, Nitin was surrounded by artists and people in fashion, but they were afraid to follow that career path. Instead, they felt pressure to do what boys were expected to do — work and earn good money to support a household. They grew up in a slum called Dharavi in Mumbai, where the circumstances didn’t leave a lot of room for experimentation.
“The day when I took [those friends] seriously, it really worked for me,” Nitin said. “I come from a slum background where I was conditioned to think that a boy has to do something sensible in their life, because they are the one who is going to get money. But then modeling was a completely new genre for me to explore. Even telling my parents that I'm getting into modeling was a big task for me.
Their parents found out about Nitin’s new career path, and their gender identity, after seeing a photo of them in a sari on Facebook. “The concern was not doing modeling. The concern was me dressing up as a woman,” they said. “So telling them that I'm doing modeling also made me realize that I have to come out in front of them. To tell them, ‘See, this is me.’”Nitin belongs to a generation of young artists who want to follow a non-traditional path to success.
