In the early ’90s, Ken Graves and Eva Lipman visited 30 high schools to photograph an essential landmark in the educations of American teen-agers: prom.
In the course of their decades-long collaboration, the photographers Ken Graves and Eva Lipman, a husband-and-wife team, documented a range of subcultures and spectacles—from ballroom-dancing competitions and boxing matches to mud baths and military training. In the early nineties, the pair travelled to thirty high schools—rural and urban, public and private—to photograph an essential landmark in the educations of American teen-agers: prom.
The kids in the pictures appear to be deep in the thrall of roles assigned to them by prom mythology. The girls wear sculptural hairdos, heavy makeup, and satin pumps; the boys look dutiful in their tuxes and gelled hair. Couples keep their hands on each other, both proprietary and passionate, and cling together on the dance floor, acting out scenes of courtship and desire.
