Designing begins in July, and artists work intensely from November to January to complete the floats in time.

When you enter Stephanie Mufson’s workshop, you’re immediately greeted by a colorful array of life-sized props. There’s a metallic dog guarding the entrance, a majestic unicorn gazing down at you, and a colorful rabbit sitting center stage.

Though the Chinese New Year Parade starts its preparations in November, Parade Guys begins building and designing in July. This means float design keeps Mufson’s 30 or so sculptors, builders, artists and other craftspeople busy nearly year-round, though just five employees stay on all year. Figures and items from a previous parade float sit outside the warehouse on Pier 54 in San Francisco on Jan. 30, 2023, to make space for the floats that are being built to take part in the Chinese New Year Parade.Although her initial love was painting, she sees a consistent thread throughout her work, whether she’s designing a float, creating her own digital art or going back to her roots and painting on canvas.
