“Nothing is stronger than sisterhood” in the new look at the beloved classic. The new footage highlights Celie and her struggles as an African American woman living in the South during the early 1900s. The trailer also depicts the relationship between a young Celie and her sister Nettie (as Sofia, Colman Domingo as Albert “Mister” Johnson, Corey Hawkins as Harpo Johnson, H.E.R. as Squeak/Mary Agnes, Ciara as Nettie Harris, Halle Bailey as a young Nettie, Aunjanue Ellis as Mama, Louis Gossett Jr.
The film’s synopsis reads: “A musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel about the life-long struggles of an African-American woman living in the South during the early 1900s.”, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones are producers. Spielberg directed the 1985 feature film adaptation of The Color Purple, with Winfrey starring as Sofia and Jones serving as a producer. The 2023 film is based on the Tony Award-winning stage musical of the same name.
