Letters to the Editor - Three cheers for neighborliness, Margot Perot, the arts

The city of Sendai in Japan has a long history of friendship and connection with Dallas, writes former Mayor Ron Kirk.In recent years, the Dallas-Fort Worth area has become a globally diverse region enriched with many cultures and serving as home to an array of businesses and people from across the world.

The ties connecting our two cities range from education, arts and culture, to sports and business — bonds nurtured by the Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth, whose mission is to foster engagement between the people of North Texas and Japan. These achievements illustrate just a fraction of the deepening connections North Texas has with Japan. Today, 280 Japanese firms — from small sales offices to industry giant Toyota — are located in this region. That’s nearly triple the number from a decade ago, making Japan the largest foreign investor in North Texas.

These are exciting times for U.S.-Japan relations in North Texas. America’s east and west coasts have long been centers of business and cultural exchange between our two countries. And now there is a third center of gravity — Texas — which is quickly becoming a new nexus for U.S.-Japan relations.
