Microsoft is still hovering over the city-sized crater it created when it dropped the bomb of a $70 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard, and now speculation turns to which giant publisher they may be next, or which...
$100 million. The current head of Microsoft’s Perfect Dark-building super-studio, The Initiative, is Darrell Gallagher, who used to be the studio head of, you guessed it, Crystal Dynamics. Now, Crystal Dynamics is on loan to Microsoft to help out with additional work on Perfect Dark as that game starts to come together. Daniel Neuburger, who directed several of Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider games, is leading Perfect Dark.
In this day and age you might not rule out say, Microsoft attempting to buy Square Enix outright, given their unlimited warchest. But as a Japanese company, that poses legal complications, and Square Enix JP obviously has a very tight relationship with Sony and PlayStation. But Crystal Dynamics becoming a Microsoft-owned developer? That’s an idea that makes a whole lot of sense to me, as I think given the right project, they can really shine .
Not every move Microsoft makes from here out has to be some sort of mega-billions acquisition. Crystal Dynamics seems like a more “traditional” purchase that would fit with them well, given the history and relationships that are already in place there.
