Lean In Girls is “a leadership program that helps girls see themselves as leaders in a world that often tells them they’re not,” per the program’s website.

Aimed at girls between 11 and 15, the program includes a leadership curriculum that aims to “equip girls to be self-assured, resilient, and inclusive everyday leaders and inspire them to lead boldly.” But given recent developments regarding Meta’s harmful role in the declining mental health of teenage girls—and Sheryl Sandberg’s own involvement—I question the very grounds that the “Lean In” mentality stands on and, subsequently, the value of teaching it to girls who are so so impressionable.
Yet, there is a fundamental disconnect between gaining individual power in a company and using that power for the benefit of other women. The very idea of leaning in requires choosing your career above all else and doing what is best for the company. But, more often than not, what’s best for the company is not what’s best for women as a collective.
