Lomas, who speaks some French and Mandarin, acknowledges that it can be tricky to isolate words from their cultural context. But he noted that a few of the entries in his lexicon, such as, are already commonly used by English speakers. Perhaps some of the rest will eventually be adopted, too, filling the gaps in our vocabularies and helping us give names to newly felt emotions, or to those that are familiar but difficult to articulate.

At the top of the list are romantic comedies — a film genre that often dips its toes in fantastical waters to create a new world of love and happiness. Romantic comedies are unique compared to action, science fiction or even drama films because they expect the viewer to believe in the power of love — as cheesy as it sounds — and we often do. Does anything compare to getting lost in a world that prioritizes witty characters, love and dramatic situations all in the same place? Romantic comedies are a form of art. And when done right, romantic comedies become cinematic staples any cinephile can quote and almost everyone will love. To understand the art of the rom-com, I spoke with three specialists in the genre: Dr. Sharon Ross, an associate professor and associate chair in the Department of Cinema and Television Arts at Columbia College Chicago; Dr. Michele Schreiber, the director of undergraduate studies and an associate professor in film and media at Emory College; and Scott Myers, an assistant professor in the School of Cinematic Arts at Depaul University.
