Summary Casting the adults of the Harry Potter series will be far different in the remake than in the movies, and this could be a significant long-term benefit. Though it will be challenging to cast actors to step into the shoes of Alan Rickman, Robbie Coltrane, Michael Gambon, and more, there are some positives to choosing actors several decades after a franchise started. Back when Warner Bros cast the original Harry Potter movies, the books weren't as widely known.
Though among the most open in her opinions, Margolyes isn't the only one to express dissinterest in the franchise. Rickman, who played Severus Snape and had positive things to say about Harry Potter after the fact, wrote in his now-public journal that he felt "a bit of nothing about HP" after he accepted the role. Then, actor Peter Mullan said in an interview that he "didn't give a shi-t" about being cast, noting that he only took the job to get his kids on set.
Margolyes and Rickman have expressed gratitude for what Harry Potter brought to their lives, but the story wasn't for them. If characters like Severus Snape, Mr. and Mrs. Weasley, the Potters, and more are played by actors who grew up loving the books and movies, then they will have an easier time connecting to audiences at home.
