Kids books on Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente and Jackie Robinson were among the titles removed from schools in Duval County, Florida.
“The law requires that a certified media specialist reviews every book in our classroom libraries and media centers,” Laureen Ricks, director of strategic communications for Duval County Public Schools, said in an emailed response to questions from USA TODAY Sports about why the books aren’t in circulation.
“At a larger level, we have to seriously ask about this: The banning of any of these books is deeply anti-truth. It’s an effort to control the ways in which people think about things by the government,” Friedman continued. “That is an astonishing thing to realize. State governments right now are either proposing or have enacted efforts to control the way we think about or learn about the world.”
If politicians, school officials and parents think these books – well, any books, but these books in particular -- need to be censored, this country is in serious trouble.
