The co-creator of The Last of Us Neil Druckmann revealed just how he's come to handle backlash about major changes that the show has made. The Last of Us follows Joel and Ellie , two survivors of a cordyceps infection that has swallowed the entire world. After Ellie proves to have a natural immunity to the Cordyceps fungus, Joel needs to transport her across the country in the hopes of finding doctors who can create a vaccine out of Ellie's biology.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While The Last of Us proved video game adaptations can be sucessful, the show did have to make some major changes from the source material in order to adapt it to a new medium. For instance, the infected are a hive mind that spread tendrils from their mouths, rather than shooting spores.
"I’ve learned to expect backlash from sneezing. I think it speaks to the kind of fans that we have, who are so protective and love the world and these characters so much that anything they see as a deviation, without the full context of what it means, they assume the worst and push back on it. I think that addition is something worthwhile. It’s actually one of those additions where I’m like, 'Oh man, I wish we had it for the game.
Another major change is the shift from spores to tendrils. In HBO's The Last of Us, the fungus reaches through the mouth to cling to its new hosts through a bite. In the game, it spreads through bites and spores in the air, which is a major zombie element removed from the show. It makes traversal through the world much easier, as the characters don't need to mumble through gas masks.
How The Last Of Us Still Stayed True To Its Source Material Despite the changes to the infected, the show has actually stayed remarkably close to the games. Major elements, including Sarah's death, Joel's watch, and even the sights in Boston, have been retained in HBO's adaptation, making the show feel like revisiting an old and familiar world.
