Disney Villains – Scar reveals this was more than just a random attack, with the moment being pivotal to Scar's future rise to power.
Their intent is to distract Mufasa, so Scar can conquer the hyenas' current queen, who threatens his rise to power, and bring her army to his command. The Comics Prove The Lion King Could Have Been Better Disney Villains – Scar #4, by expanding on the "Hyenas in the Pride Lands" moment from The Lion King, gives the moment an unexpected level of importance. In the movie, the scene's purpose was to demonstrate the demands of Mufasa's job as king. Now, it is one of the first steps viewers see him take toward walking into Scar's trap. Scar #4 also retconned how the scene originally played out in The Lion King.
