Disney has released a video of The Little Mermaid’s new song “The Scuttlebutt,” a divisive addition to the remake that features Awkwafina rapping.
Awkwafina's now-infamous rap song "The Scuttlebutt" from The Little Mermaid has been released online. The latest of Disney's live-action remakes, The Little Mermaid serves as an updated retelling of the company's 1989 animated classic. The film features an array of iconic songs from the original as well as a few new numbers.
Now, following the release of The Little Mermaid in theaters, Walt Disney Studios has shared "The Scuttlebutt" song scene from the film on YouTube. Watch the scene below: SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT "The Scuttlebutt" lyrics are written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and the music is composed by original Little Mermaid composer Alen Menken. Although many of the comments on the video are positive, the song itself has been met with widespread criticism for not matching the tone or quality of songs from the original movie.
In addition to adding three new songs, two songs, including "Daughters of Triton" and "Les Poissons," were cut from the Little Mermaid remake. Other songs had their lyrics altered, with both "Kiss the Girl" and "Poor Unfortunate Souls" receiving updates. The Little Mermaid's lyric changes were part of an effort to update the film for more modern sensibilities, removing elements that could be considered offensive or at least insensitive.
While not all of the song additions, cuts, and changes have been received well, The Little Mermaid currently boasts a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and is performing quite well at the domestic box office. Despite underperforming globally and completely flopping in Asia, the film generally seems to be considered one of Disney's better live-action remakes.
