TheMaskedSinger has a season 9 winner!
returned for the grand finale on Wednesday, and the two greatest performers of season 9 faced off in a one-on-one duel for the Golden Mask Trophy! and overseen by stalwart panelists Robin Thicke, Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy and Nicole Scherzinger, Wednesday's exciting finale saw the Medusa and The Macaw, duke it out for their coveted prize, with each showing off their skills with two separate performances.
"Medusa, I just want to say that, you know, usually, after a few performances, people have kind of shown all their tricks, they've shown you everything they got and it's hard to keep on connecting," Thicke shared."But the consistency that you've shown with your passion and your presence every single time, you've been one of my favorites of all nine seasons."
"I don't know about you guys, but to me that sounded like a winning anthem that she just sang," McCarthy declared. The unmasking was a tearful one, as Jeong began to cry at the reveal, and explained that when his wife was in the hospital in 2007, due to complications with her pregnancy, they watched Archuleta on American Idol.
Finally, it was time for the season's champion to take the stage and ditch the snakes. After the judges all made their final guesses this time around, Medusa unmasked and revealed herself as"River" singer Bishop Briggs! "I just got to tell you, not only did you take us to church, you bursted our hearts wide open," McCarthy praised."Medusa, we freaking love you!"
Finally, it was time to vote, and after all the votes were counted, it was revealed that Medusa and The Macaw would be moving on to the finale, while The California Rolls would have to unmask. After the panel all made their final guesses, each of The California Rolls unmasked and revealed themselves to be the celebrated a cappella group, the Pentatonix!
"We haven't! My mind is blown! Just bring out the Golden Mask trophy right now, for crying out loud," McCarthy praised, as Scherzinger added,"That's right! Individually, your voices, each person, you're a force to be reckoned with. But together, collectively? You are limitless." "If she sang that in the finale, she would win," McCarthy said, as all four panelists stood on the desk to applaud the night's best performance. Scherzinger called her"the one to beat" and praised her vulnerability and fearlessness.
The Mantis was the last contestant to come out, and the insectoid singer brought some old-school rock to the stage with a fun, engaging performance of The Kinks' iconic classic"You Really Got Me." The vocals were smooth and exciting and Mantis got the audience pumped with a great cover. "But you guys have had just wonderful, surprising, ridiculous guests, you know? I mean, Grammy winners and nominees down to surprising people, like me, that you don't necessarily expect," he added."So, it has been a joy. It has been a joy to be on this show."
"Loved singing around the homies. You know, and to the ladies, of course," he added with a laugh."But I came to the stage, and I'm just telling y'all, it's way more [nerve-racking] than being on a football field."The reigning champ, The Dandelion, was the first to hit the stage, and she wowed the panel and the audience from the start when she came out playing the piano and delivered a stunning cover of Muse's"Starlight" that left everyone in awe.
The last act of the night was The UFO, who impressed the judges with her energy and her unique costume before she even opened her mouth and showed off her delicate and beautiful voice as she sang a charming and heartwarming rendition of Coldplay's iconic single"Yellow." With Dandelion floating off into the wind, this meant The Lamp and The UFO had to face off in the night's Battle Royal, with each belting out verses from the thematically on-point song choice of Elton John's"Rocketman." While both put in a valiant effort, The UFO's vocal texture and take on the tune edged out The Lamp, and secured The UFO the night's win.
"Yeah, I love the song choice, and and I think there was such an elegance, [you're] a seasoned performer," Robin marveled."This person knows how to work a crowd. You got the crowd in the palm of your hand, right away." Wendt's unmasking left Scorpio and The Doll facing off in a Battle Royal, where each sang verses from Duran Duran's"Hungry Like the Wolf." Despite an evenly matched showdown, The Doll managed to eek out a win, and thus was crowned the champion.
