There I was reading a book about Sumner Redstone, and yet I found myself unable to stop thinking about Rupert Murdoch. Unscripted: The Epic Battle for a Media Empire and the Redstone Family Legacy
Though there’s been ample reporting on the final years of Redstone’s life, “Unscripted” unearths even more sordid details about how close a pair of his paramours, Sydney Holland and Manuela Herzer, came to taking control of the company even though Redstone’s own daughter, Shari, should have been handed the keys to her father’s kingdom many years before she actually took control.
Today, Redstone presides over Paramount Global, the combined entity of Viacom and CBS. The company is relatively stable though by no means out of the woods.
It’s entirely possible Murdoch’s rationale was rooted in empowering his son, current Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch, to cement future control over both companies. Unsurprisingly, Rupert’s other son, James, voiced his objections to his father’s move with both boards. What’s so fascinating about corporate successions is how often they seem to be the Achilles' heel for otherwise invincible figures.
