The NBA calls Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun and Jabari Smith Jr. 'Rising Stars,' but will they?

Rockets players Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun and Jabari Smith Jr. are part of NBA's Rising Stars game but growth in Houston has been hard to measure.SALT LAKE CITY — There will be a day, when the Rockets' young players aren't young any longer, that they will look back on their Rising Stars years.

That mindset says excellence is achievable, if clearly a long way off, for a team that again brings the NBA’s worst record into the All-Star break. The Rockets' seven consecutive losses included the worst sort — games blown in the final seconds and no-show blowouts at Oklahoma City. That is the general idea of the event, a break not just from the grind of the season and the deluge of losses it has brought the Rockets, but from the need to make the strides necessary to take them from where they are on the bottom to where they plan to be.

Strides made by Sengun and Green are apparent, if insufficient to either carry the Rockets to success or guarantee they one day they will. In different ways, Sengun and Green inspire hope, not just that they can be the foundation of a winning team, but that Smith could similarly escape his rookie struggles in his second season.

He averages the ninth most frontcourt touches among centers, sixth most since the start of January, reflecting his increased role. But after averaging an impressive 18.3 points on 62.4 percent shooting along with 6.2 assists in January, he has averaged 13.3 points on 48.1 percent shooting and 4.1 assists in February’s eight games.
