The Tez Walker saga at North Carolina is a symbol of the dying days of college sports’ “student-athlete” infrastructure.

Devontez Walker was finally declared eligible to play for North Carolina this month after a drawn-out saga that pitted the school and the NCAA against each other. North Carolina transfer wide receiver Tez Walker punctuated his first start of the season this past weekend with a superstar stat line — six catches for 132 yards and three touchdowns — in a 41-31 victory over the Hurricanes.

Within an already formidable offense that features Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Drake Maye, Walker seems destined to break out down the stretch this season. Accordingly, North Carolina checks all the mid-October boxes of a legitimate playoff contender , and Walker’s NFL draft stock is rising by the snap. So, of course, all of this almost didn’t happen because of the NCAA and, technically, North Carolina itself.

Unsurprisingly, the NCAA’s language excluded events such as a head coach and his staff leaving to take another job as grounds for a second transfer. . In the appeal, Walker and North Carolina cited the player’s mental health and a need to live closer to his grandmother.on Sept. 7 slamming the NCAA. “Shame on you, NCAA. SHAME ON YOU!” it concluded. Two days later, the Tar Heels named Walker an honorary captain for their game against Appalachian State.

Walker’s case is absurd, a snag of petulant legalese in the face of plain logic. But that’s nothing new for the NCAA and its member schools. Their public candor, however, was new. In fact, even when Walker’s eligibility saga finally concluded, the NCAA tookOn Oct. 5, Walker was magically cleared by the NCAA. Just like that! In its latest statement, the NCAA claimed the change in course was because of newly submitted information by UNC it said could have been included previously.
