of Elizabeth Loftus, one of the most influential psychologists of the twentieth century. Loftus became celebrated for rendering obsolete the idea that memories exist in a kind of mental library, as literal representations of past events. According to Loftus, memories are reconstructed, not replayed. But, as Aviv explores, Loftus’s findings can come into conflict with urgent contemporary moral issues.
The psychologist taught us that what we remember is not fixed, but her work testifying for defendants like Harvey Weinstein collides with our traumatized moment.
