Four times as many Kansans changed their gender on birth certificates and driver’s licenses this year ahead of a new state law that prevents residents from identifying themselves differently than the sex assigned them at birth.

Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach speaks during a news conference during which he declares that a new state law prevents transgender people from changing their birth certificates and driver's licenses to reflect their gender identities, Monday, June 26, 2023, at the Statehouse in Topeka, Kans. The state saw an increase of more than 300% this year in the number of people seeking to change the gender markers on those documents.

Asked whether he would sue Kelly if she doesn't, he replied, “If that were necessary, then absolutely.” An average of 58 Kansas residents a month have changed their birth certificates so far this year, compared to an average of 13 from July 2019 through 2022, according to state health department figures released this week.
