While at Sundance, ThePodGeneration writer and director Sophie Barthes discussed themes of detachment and the impeccable work by Emilia Clarke & Chiwetel Ejiofor:
The Pod Generation was one of the success stories of this year's Sundance Film Festival, having won the coveted Alfred P. Sloan Award before their premiere even took place. Written and directed by Sophie Barthes, who tackled the themes of technology and emotional detachment rather differently in Cold Souls, the satire envisions a world where women of a certain economic class can opt out of "natural" pregnancy and use the Womb Center's pods as a surrogate instead.
Sophie Barthes on The Pod Generation at Sundance Screen Rant: Both The Pod Generation and Old Souls deal with the issue of detachment in a way. Can you talk about what inspired this different angle? Rachel and Alvy fundamentally disagree in this film, but it's also built as a healthy romance. What did Emilia and Chiwetel bring to the roles and relationship?
I love the arguments in the film. What is unnatural and what is natural? For you, what is one technology that is second nature for us?
