Rosh Mahtani is the third recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design, presented to the designer by the Princess Royal.
As historical British landmarks go, the Crypt of St Etheldreda’s is something of a hidden treasure. Few Londoners know of its existence, let alone its storied past: King Henry VIII held a three-day wedding feast here in 1531, and during the Elizabethan era it served as a safe haven for persecuted Catholics.
Yesterday, the church played host to a royal event of a different kind—namely, the annual presentation of the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design. After Richard Quinn and Bethany Williams, Rosh Mahtani is the third recipient of the prize, and the first jewelry designer to be granted the prestigious honor.Alighieri
label, which takes its name from the famous Italian poet Dante. There were candles and bundles of bright yellow mimosa flowers scattered along the medieval stone walls where the rough-hewn gold coin necklaces, bracelets, and talismans from her new collection—titled “Love in the Wasteland,” in reference to the poetry of T. S. Eliot—were displayed on miniature plinths.
Dressed in a neat kelly green suit, Princess Anne was in attendance to present the award alongside Stephanie Phair and Caroline Rush of the British Fashion Council. In her address, the Princess Royal acknowledged the impact of jewelry design on the British fashion landscape and the tradition of jewelry manufacturing that is still very much alive in the surrounding area, known as Hatton Garden, where Mahtani produces her designs.
“I remember when I first stumbled into the casting shop nearby with a little wax book that was full of holes—I was surprised they didn’t laugh in my face, but they supported me right away,” said Mahtani, who is self-taught, in her acceptance speech. “It’s really like a family, there is so much history here. And it’s such an honor to still be able to make everything within these six streets.”
