Fortunately for EV owners who value range as well as fun, tire manufacturers are working on ways to help minimize the price physics makes us pay.

It's no secret that most electric vehicles on the market today are more than mere transportation. Today's EVs are often sporty, fast, and fun. That's great for those of us who love to drive, but it can make it harder to choose the right tire. Why? Because of the inherently competing interests of EV range, tire grip, and tire wear.

"One aspect that consumers and even dealers have been getting surprised by is just going to a new tire from a worn tire in the exact same tire model," Calder said."There can be about a 6 percent change in range between when the tire is new and when the tire's at the end of life. So when a consumer switches from a worn-out tire that's tuned for range and moves to a brand-new tire that's tuned for wear, it's a compound effect.

So how much do different types of EV tires matter? Quite a bit, it turns out, especially when it comes to range. It might seem a bit counterintuitive that a tire with long-life wear properties would be less efficientif it doesn't wear down, surely that means it doesn't offer a lot of rolling resistance, right? That would seem to make sense, but in fact, it's the opposite.

Hold the phone! How is a soft tire more efficient in terms of rolling resistance than a harder tire? As explained above, it's the flex of the tire carcass at the contact patch that determines most of a tire's energy loss, and a softer compound will bend more easily, meaning less energy is lost to those flexing forces, and therefore the vehicle's range will be greater.
