In the 1960s, Bruce Lee tried to land a movie role in Hollywood that would have completely altered the entire trajectory of his acting career.
A role in The Sand Pebbles would have completely changed Bruce Lee’s acting career. Released in 1966, The Sand Pebbles was one of many projects Lee expressed an interest in. During this period in Lee’s life, the actor faced a great deal of difficulty in getting his Hollywood movie career off the ground. Ultimately, Lee was able to star in only one American movie before his death in 1973.
For Lee, the 1960s was a time when acting gigs were hard to come by. His efforts paid off in 1966 when he landed the co-starring role of Kato in ABC’s The Green Hornet, but the series didn’t immediately lead to more opportunities, nor did it last long. Lee was out of work again when the show was canceled after just one season. For a few years, Lee stuck to bit roles and appearances in TV shows like Longstreet. It wasn’t until 1971 that his career finally took off.

According to Bruce Lee: A Life, a Bruce Lee biography written by Matthew Polly, there was a role that could have served as a massive turning point in Lee’s career.
How huge this would have been for Lee’s career is illustrated by The Sand Pebbles’ reputation. The 1966 war drama, notable for its overt anti-Vietnam War message, wasn’t a box office success, but it was met with critical acclaim. In fact, it was nominated for a total of eight Academy Awards. One of those went to Mako, whose performance was extremely well-received.
It’s important to note that Bruce Lee’s popularity as a martial arts star and move to Hong Kong came about as a result of the actor not finding the work he wanted in Hollywood. So had he appeared in The Sand Pebbles, it’s entirely possible that movies like The Big Boss and Fist of Fury would have been produced with other actors in the lead roles. In turn, his biggest film and one of the most iconic kung fu movies of all time, Enter the Dragon, would most likely have never been made at all.
