Abel bought a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise in 1959. Abel quit selling Kentucky Fried Chicken 10 years later and developed his own recipe after Sanders sold his company and the new owners turned the chicken concept into more of a fast-food item.“He’s just as distinguished looking in person as in his pictures,” Abel said of Sanders."He has white hair and a neat white mustache and goatee.”

Sanders then operated a steamboat, sold tires and even delivered babies. In his spare time, he studied to be a lawyer. He was at war with a competing Standard Oil station down the road. Sanders shot his competitor, injuring him, after the man shot and killed a business associate of Sanders.' He was never charged because Sanders was defending himself.
