Review: John Cameron Mitchell's take on the Tiger King can't save JoeVSCarole.
. It was an event, passive and mostly harmless in a time of so much horrible, material, devastating occasion.phenomenon that people will tune into the new scripted series, retells the story thatenthusiasts already know so well: the erratic gay good ol’ boy Joe Exotic running a roughshod zoo of sorts in the Oklahoma wilderness and going to war with Carole Baskin, a perky-aggressive idealist who runs an animal sanctuary in Florida and believes Exotic is harming the animals in his care.
, a sensation in the late 1990s and early 2000s that solidified Mitchell’s place in the alt-scene firmament. He’s worked plenty since, as a director and an actor, but he’s probably not the biggest name the producers ofcould have landed for such a notable role. Which is why, in part, it works so well. There is simple mimicry there, yes, but Mitchell also taps into a latent Exotic spirit that finely shades the character.
