China saw its deadliest day from the coronavirus on Wednesday, in the same week that Chinese health officials predicted that the pneumonia-like virus was nearing its peak.

Some 242 people died in Hubei province, the centre of the outbreak, on Wednesday, making it the highest daily death tally since 103 deaths were recorded on Monday. In total, at least 1,350 people have died from the virus, mostly in Hubei.were confirmed in Hubei on Thursday, mostly in the capital, Wuhan. This brings the number of confirmed infections to around 60,000.

The surge in recorded cases comes days after health experts in China predicted that the illness was close to reaching its peak. The nation’s senior medical advisor on TuesdayAsian markets were shaken by the news with China’s Shanghai Composite down 0.7%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index dropped 0.3%.: Officials in Hubei have switched their testing methods. Previously, the illness was identified using RNA tests, also known as ribonucleic acid. These tests would take days to process.

“A lot of what we are seeing is not people deliberately misleading, but simply that the reality is taking a long time to catch up with the facts. It’s not so much we disbelieve it, but we [are uncertain] around the numbers we’re seeing, not because we think that people are misleading us deliberately, but they don’t, I think, have the correct figures at this time.”: China’s government has launched unprecedented measures in an attempt to halt the spread of the coronavirus.
