Sylvie Macmillan has pushed the boundaries of, and we mean that literally. She regularly breaches the cuticles — to wrap entire hands in clouds of moss, to create an ombré wash of seashells that stretch to the knuckles, to turn fingers into a butterfly garden . "'Mani' [from the Latin word 'manus'] means hand," says Macmillan, so it only makes sense to "beautify the whole hand and make that my canvas.
Her kit is filled with materials you’d be more likely to find in an abstract artist's studio than a nail salon: jade gemstones, seashells, feathers, even flour . "It’s a huge [88-pound] bag of random bits and bobs," she says. "There is a way to make every material work, but you can’t force it. You just have to adapt to it.
and "they turned into stained glass windows," she says. "If something is a little bit grim or grotesque, it can still be beautiful."Macmillan has been a manicurist for only five years, but she learned how to make a big impact on a small scale as a model maker designing miniatures for museums and window displays, such as a tiny chair made to showcase a Tiffany & Co. diamond ring.
