The biggest names in sports, music, and more gave advice on succeeding in fields that are hard to break into.
day when 240 Chicago high school basketball players filed in to Venue SIX10 on February 15. Instead of parents and volunteers, the students from eight different underserved high schools would be guided throughout the day by some of the biggest names in the NBA, music, and beyond: Derrick Rose, Jonah Hill, Pusha T, and Candace Parker, to name a few.
“You gotta be kind of tough to grow up here,” Rose said at the start of the session. “You gotta be very strong, mentally. And every day is a fight.” The students gathered around adidas employees’ computers and directed them on which colors should go where, incorporating their experiences growing up in Chicago into the design. One team used a silhouette of the Chicago skyline next to the word Strength.
Like the sneaker lab, the broadcasting workshop brought a sports-related career opportunity to life for the high schoolers. Maria Taylor, an ESPN analyst, co-led the session along with WNBA player Candace Parker, ESPN analyst andplayer Chiney Ogwumike, and retired NBA player Tracy McGrady. The group put students behind a news desk and directed them to read from a teleprompter and conduct interviews.
Chiney Ogwumike took a different route: Born in Texas, she played for Stanford before signing with the Los Angeles Sparks in 2014 and becoming a full-time analyst in 2018. “I just fell into broadcasting,” she said. “[I] didn’t plan it, and so having a program like this would’ve helped me.”
