May 20 is National Endangered Species Day. No better day to appreciate and recognize the...
Texas has the 7th largest number of species at very high, high or moderate risk, according data from NatureServe, a US non-profit organization that assigns conservation status rankings to plant and animal species.
The TPWD data is available on a county level so that users can inspect species with documented or likely habitats in specific counties. TPWD’s target audience for the county-level data are planners and developers looking to build in areas that may be crucial habitats to threatened species. There are ten endangered and 19 threatened species that are found — or, in the case of whales on the list below, have the potential to be found — in Harris County. Endangered and threatened species are provided legal protection under federal and state laws because they are at greatest risk of extinction or extirpation, a term meaning local instead of global loss.
