Some San Marcos city bus routes were shuttered temporarily on Tuesday after thieves made off with 10 catalytic converters from 10 city busses overnight Monday.

According to the city of San Marcos, the hub station of the city’s Capital Area Rural Transportation System CARTS, or CARTS, was targeted by thieves who stole the converters sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning. The burglary forced two routes to be temporarily suspended while the city found replacement buses.

The San Marcos Police Department is investigating the case, said Nadine Bonewitz, San Marcos city spokeswoman. The city contracts with CARTS to provide bus route service in the city. A CARTS spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment. Catalytic converters are a popular target for thieves because they have expensive metals inside, like platinum, palladium and rhodium. They convert exhaust gases like carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide into water vapor.
