County commissioners on Tuesday committed $37 million to prevent shootings and other violence with a number of mental health initiatives and a gun safety education campaign.

Also included is $1 million in outreach and education promoting responsible gun ownership and safety that county Public Information Officer Monica Ramos said will reach “every corner of the county” and $100,000 for gun locks that will be distributed primarily through the sheriff’s office.Commissioner Justin Rodriguez said the initiatives are a good start at a time when “everyone feels helpless” after the Uvalde school shooting, as it appears Gov.

Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff urged county staff to fast-track requests for bids and the contracting process to quickly begin providing needed services at a time when gun violence has been on the rise.Commissioner Rebeca Clay-Flores said the school-based therapy will be a blessing for parents in her Southwest Side precinct who shouldn’t have to “drive across town” to take their child to a psychiatrist.

“It becomes an almost untenable pressure on the school system to do those sort of things,” Barnard said. She acknowledged that the horrific mass shooting at Robb Elementary School, with 19 children and two teachers killed, will leave a lasting scar on the [email protected]
