AUBURN UNIVERSITY —There are some different herd management tactics for cattle producers in south Alabama, which can be quite different than it is for producers in the central and northern parts of the state. At the Third Annual Gulf Coast Cattlemen’s Conference and Southwest Alabama Cattlemen’s Cookout, producers can learn from industry experts on topics that are tailored to south Alabama.
Hosted by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association the conference is Friday, Aug. 9, at Grace Fellowship Church in Atmore. Ken Kelley, an Alabama Extension farm and agribusiness management regional agent, said this conference has proven to be beneficial for cattle producers on the Gulf Coast.
“We anticipate that this year will be as informative and interactive as previous conferences were,” Kelley said. “This is really a great opportunity for cattle and forage producers to learn from industry experts, make connections with other producers and check out some of the products our sponsors will have on display.”There is no cost for the conference and lunch is provided. However, registration is required to attend. People can register online at www.aces.edu/go/4338.
Beginning at 8 a.m., producers can check in and visit with conference vendors and sponsors. The welcome and conference kickoff starts at 8:30 a.m. Throughout the day, producers will hear from several industry experts on a variety of topics. These include the following:o Josh Maples, Mississippi State University Extension• How to Properly Integrate and Manage Winter Annuals in South AlabamaThis year’s conference is a joint program between Alabama Extension and the ACA.
“The Producer Profitability Initiative is a grassroots movement, started and led by cattle producers, that looks to create a more sustainable future for the American livestock industry,” Kelley said. “The initiative focuses on improving areas that impact producers most, such as labor challenges, barriers for entry-level producers, improved government programs and others.”Kelley encourages cattle producers anywhere on the Gulf Coast to take part in the conference.
