“Join the conversation, and you're the one who can change things.”
It’s not often teens get a voice in government, or a platform to argue how they’d like to see it change. But every night on Broadway, a new play is asking New York City high school students to engage in a live debate about whether we should keep the Constitution or toss it and start over. Arguments often refer to daily headlines, and an audience member decides the winner.
TW: I think that radical change at this moment of time will equal chaos. The people at the top right now, they're not going to do what's best for us. To make a better future is to not let history repeat itself. [If we make] a new Constitution, history is going to repeat because it's the same people who made it in the past. They’re elitist, rich, white men who want things for themselves. I fear for my life if they're like, "OK, we're getting a new Constitution.
RC: I think that we're putting too much on one document. The Constitution is just a piece of paper, whoever's in charge — you need to acknowledge your mistakes, that what you're doing is wrong. So I'm speaking to everyone that is in charge: Instead of focusing on the paper, think like a real person.
