Progressive advocate Sue Altman has jump into the 7th congressional district race. Former Congressman Tom Malinowski is not running.

The win helped Republicans gain control of the House. National Democrats are already targeting the district, sensing Kean may be more vulnerable in a blue state during presidential election years. The Democratic Congressional Campaign CommitteeKean campaign strategist Harrison Neely said Altman “represents the most divisive and extreme aspects of the fringe of her party.”

Altman’s left-leaning stances make her an unexpected candidate in the divided district, which Democrats agreed to make more Republican during redistricting in exchange for protecting other districts. Asked about whether her politics may be polarizing in the district, Jones said there are “those out there that express that school of thought.” He also noted she is a “progressive woman” and that could lead to more “engagement” from women voters. At least one other Democrat is considering entering the race: former state Sen. Ray Lesniak of Union County, who said Tuesday he will make a decision after this November’s elections.

Lesniak doesn’t live in the district but noted he lives close by, in Elizabeth. Members of the U.S. House must live in the state, but are not required to reside in their districts.
