The cancellation comes less than two weeks after another drag event at Anderson Distillery & Grill in Roanoke, also in Denton County,. A video of the groups shouting at each other outside the event went viral. Denton police officials said they are “aware of the situation” and noted that Cool Beans’ owner filed a police report “regarding the numerous phone calls and social media messages received about the now-canceled event.”The restaurant has hosted drag events in the past, which appear to typically be at nighttime and generally were for those 18 and older. The business, which serves a full menu of food, is open to all ages during the daytime.
Denton Mayor Gerard Hudspeth asked city staff Thursday about business rights and if any ordinances could regulate events hosted, according toStaff responded that it would not “regulate an event such as this” since it doesn’t qualify as a “special event.” The city’s regulations don’t prohibit the event since the business is categorized as restaurant-use, which allows it to have indoor shows and other group events that don’t impact city resources or public safety.
