Warriors in the Garden is a collective of activists established in the summer of 2020 in the wake of the George Floyd protests. We are a collective of chosen warriors and protectors coming together in solidarity in the face of all our collective pain and respective movements. I joined WITG in the face of the painful string of Asian hate crimes in the past year, in recognition that the root of our violence is our common oppressor: white supremacy.
Right before the pandemic broke out, I went to work for [a client]. I came to work wearing a mask before masks were enforced. I coughed once and a staffer came up to me to ask, “Did you just come from home?” I didn’t realize that she was actually asking me if I had just come from China. I shrugged and said yes, confused. After a few minutes of silence, she returned with the building’s security team, all dressed in hazmat suits, including one for me. It was one of the most mortifying experiences, being treated like a human virus.
