The idea of a nanophotonic electron accelerator was initially introduced in 2015, but this is the first time scientists have successfully activated and operated it. The nanophotonic electron accelerator’s main acceleration tube is incredibly small, measuring merely 0.02 inches in length. It is54 million times shorter than the ring-shaped tunnel that forms the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Switzerland. The LHC is the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator, with a circular ring spanning 16.8 miles .“We gained energy of 12 kiloelectron volts. That is a 43 percent gain in energy,” said Leon Brückner, one of the study authors.
