The “it” girl brand Selkie is among those leading the charge for more inclusive extended sizing 💕✨
loves supporting the brand. “It feels amazing to support a brand that is also supporting and lifting the plus-size community,” she tells. “They make clothing that is fun, whimsical, and princess-like. And everyone deserves to experience that, not just straight sizes.”Rayburn, who lives with a chronic illness, says fashion has become an important part of healing along her medical journey and uplifting her mental health. For her, the “breathtaking” Selkie dresses help her feel better.
TikToker Angel Njoku feels the same way. She heard about the brand two years ago on Instagram and finally purchased her first Selkie for her 21st birthday last year. She later posted“I feel like I’m usually nervous wearing puffy dresses as a plus-size person because they make me look even bigger, but none of that mattered with my Selkie dress because I looked and felt ethereal,” Njoku tells.
“It's insane that we shut large women out of fashion. No matter how you frame it, not offering sizing is fatphobic and inherently bigoted,” Gordon says. “Even at Wildfox, I knew whatever I did next I would no longer uphold this systemic issue, and if we are talking about Selkies [the mythical creatures] finding their skin again, we are talking about equal access to joy.”
Some brands say it’s too difficult or expensive to provide plus sizes in their collections, but Gordon believes that is no excuse. “What they mean is they aresmaller bodies," she says. "Expanding can be challenging, but not more so than starting a business, to begin with. I think if they can realize their own part in systemic fatphobia, as I did, they willTo date, Selkie’s track record is impressive.
