Three pedestrians were fatally injured Sunday morning in Fairfax County in separate incidents, two of them on the Capital Beltway and one on a county street , according to state and county police. The two Beltway deaths occurred within a short distance and time, just south of the city of Alexandria, but seemed otherwise unconnected, according to state police. The first of the Beltway incidents occurred around 3:30 a.m. Sunday on the shoulder of the inner loop, east of exit 176.

Someone who was changing a tire on the westbound shoulder was struck by a truck and died at the scene, state police said. No name, gender or other identifying information was given. Within about a half-hour, a pedestrian was found lying in the roadway on the outer loop, also near exit 176, state police said. Witnesses told state police that the pedestrian had “stumbled into oncoming traffic” and was struck. She died at the scene. Police described her only as female
