A planned Tom Thumb grocery store in Dallas' Red Bird community has been canceled after Albertsons Companies Inc. withdrew from the deal at the last minute.

An exterior view of the Tom Thumb grocery store on Live Oak Street, just east of downtown Dallas , April 19, 2022. Tom Thumb parent Albertsons Companies Inc. had reached an agreement with the city involving some $5.8 million in incentives to open a new location in Red Bird. That deal fell through at the last second.A new Tom Thumb would have been a big get for southern Dallas ’ Red Bird community, where people have long wanted a high-quality grocery store .

Another factor in grocery store competition is the failed Kroger-Albertsons merger.Albertsons spokesperson Christy Lara told us the company conducted a final review ahead of the deadline to commit to this project in September, as it does with all projects. Albertsons determined the project was no longer viable but “gave extraordinary additional consideration” prior to “making the difficult decision,” she said.It doesn’t appear Albertsons is acting in bad faith. It “has committed to providing no-fee delivery” in ZIP codes near the planned Tom Thumb and is exploring other ways to support the community, this newspaper reported. That said, if the company ever had a reason to think the store might not work out, we’re left wondering why it allowed this process to get so far. And it would be helpful to know why, even with a big incentive package, it wasn’t feasibl
