Toy Story and Toy Story 4's massive quality difference is unpacked by VFX artists, citing the technological advancements between the films.
VFX artists unpack the quality differences between the animation in Toy Story and Toy Story 4. Disney Pixar released Toy Story in 1995, and Toy Story 4 was released nearly 20 years later in 2019. The development of Toy Story 5 was also recently announced by Disney alongside other sequel development.
VFX artists explain what went into the massive technological advancements between Toy Story and Toy Story 4. On the Corridor Crew YouTube channel, VFX artists break down a scene of a dog from the first Toy Story movie and a more realistic-looking cat from Toy Story 4. The Corridor Crew explained that this cat was created using “shadow mapping” technology, developed after Toy Story’s creation, that casts a more realistic shadow and shaping over the animated object in question.
The Corridor Crew alludes to an additional challenge for the Toy Story creative team: how to create updated characters without straying too far from the originals. When animators make sequels of or otherwise adapt older original source material, they have to make a decision about how to update the characters. They can radically change them, as The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water did to SpongeBob and his gang.
As the animated series has been released over the course of 25 years, the Toy Story films are uniquely situated within the development of animated films. Animation is developing so rapidly that with each Toy Story film comes the opportunity to explore new animated techniques. Now, the world will just have to wait and see what improvements Pixar has in store for Toy Story 5.
