Toyota unveils hydrogen and electric AE86 restomods.
Toyota Gazoo Racing's theme for the 2023 Tokyo Auto Salon is cheesy, but still lovable."Toyota: Leaving no car lovers behind" is an exhibit focused on the future of car enthusiasm, with motorsports-bred rally cars, performance accessories, and carbon-neutral versions of classics. As part of that last category, the company revealed two rad zero-emission AE86 Corollas.
The clumsy sounding"Carbon neutrality for protecting beloved cars" part of the exhibit features an AE86 converted to run on battery-electric power and one that uses a hydrogen engine. The BEV AE86 is the more traditional approach. It uses a Tundra hybrid motor for motivation and a Prius PHEV lithium-ion battery for power storage. The transmission is the only unconventional part, as Toyota has adapted a manual transmission for the AE86 EV.
