Cathy Rosenthal shares a strategy to get a dog to come inside after his nightly potty...

Once your dog understands he will get a treat when called, pair this new skill with the sound of a bell for better recall.I have a 6-month-old dog who doesn’t listen when I call him inside after his last potty break of the evening. I usually have to put on my robe and slippers and physically go get him. How do I teach him to come when called? I don’t want to be doing this during the winter months.Get a high-value treat and keep it in your pocket.

He will eventually connect the sound of the bell with the treat. At night, if you call and he doesn’t come, gently tap the bell so he can hear it, and walk into the house. When he sees you have disappeared, he will come looking for you to get his treat. At this point, you should be able to open the door to let him in. Always give him a treat when you call him in at night, and he will always come when called. The bell is just a better sound for recall than our voices.
