In 2019, Ahmad Abouammo was arrested and charged with committing wire fraud, as well as with acting as an agent of a foreign government without disclosing that work.

Over the past two weeks, lawyers for Ahmad Abouammo described him as a dutiful Twitter employee caught in the crosshairs of law enforcement while managing media partnerships in the Middle East and North Africa. Prosecutors said he had misused the job to spy for Saudi Arabia.

In 2019, Abouammo was arrested and charged with committing wire fraud, as well as with acting as an agent of a foreign government without disclosing that work. Ali Alzabarah, a former colleague of Abouammo’s who fled the country, was also charged. Prosecutors said the plot had begun when Abouammo met Bader Binasaker, a top adviser for Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman. At the time, Binasaker was operating as a foreign government official, and Abouammo knew it, prosecutors said. They continued communicating with each other and later met in London, where Binasaker gave Abouammo a luxury watch.
