TORONTO — If the Spurs wind up trading Jakob Poeltl back to the Raptors, he’ll join them with a pretty good idea of how good they can be before the season is over.
“When you turn it over against Toronto, it’s like a bucket at the other end with their speed and their athleticism,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. With the Raptors reportedly interested in pursing Poeltl ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline, Toronto coach Nick Nurse didn’t hold back when asked about the development of the 7-foot-1 Austrian.
“That’s pretty good on the list of big guy things to do. If you can rebound and protect the rim and pass the ball, set a few screens, not bad. He can handle it, get it to the rim and finish it too. We really liked him when he was here.” It seems like nearly every other game Popovich is asked about the NBA’s scoring explosion this season.
Indeed, the Spurs are 0-36 in games this season when they trail entering the third quarter, which is when they often start falling apart after keeping things close through the first 30 minutes or so.
