Trump faced criticism for his initial response to the coronavirus outbreak when he appeared to contradict health officials in his own administration.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump donated his quarterly salary to the Department of Health and Human Services at a time when the agency is responding to the global outbreak of the coronavirus, the White House said Tuesday.

Trump"made a commitment to donate his salary while in office," White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham posted Tuesday to Twitter. Grisham said he chose HHS to support"the efforts being undertaken to confront, contain, and combat #Coronavirus." The president faced criticism for his initial response to the outbreak when he appeared to contradict health officials in his own administration about the scope of the virus. At a rally last week, Trump described concerns about the virus as a"hoax," and then later said he was referring to the Democratic response to the outbreak. When he was running for office, Trump pledged he wouldn't accept his $400,000 annual presidential salary if elected.
