The former college football player was running in a crowded primary and two conservative groups -- the Club for Growth and a super PAC aligned with the House Freedom Caucus – have spent more than $2 million to help him. He was endorsed by former President Donald Trump. He faced seven other candidates. They included attorney Kelly Daughtry, who has put millions of her own money in the race, and former Rep. Renee Ellmers, who may have some name recognition in the area from her time representing part of the district from 2011 to 2017.
